Plinth lights sit in the kickboard at the base of kitchen and utility units. They wash the floor with a soft glow, make the units look as if they float, and give you gentle light for a night-time trip to the kitchen without switching on the main lights. This guide covers the choices that matter and answers the questions we are asked most often.

Plinth spotlights or LED strip?
Plinth spotlights
Small round or square lights set into the plinth board. Each one throws a pool of light onto the floor, and together they create a rhythm along the run of units.
- Halo TrioTone®: a recessed round light with a diffused cover, in black or stainless steel. IP44.
- Luce TrioTone®: a super-thin square stainless steel light that sits flush to the plinth board. Available individually or as a pack of 4.
- Stellar Pro™: a larger 35mm round light with a stainless steel rim, recessed or surface mounted with the collar supplied.
- Iris™: a small, discreet natural white light, also suitable for bathroom zone 2. The pack of 4 includes a Titan driver and a 3-pin plug.
LED strip along the plinth
For a continuous line of light rather than separate pools, fit LED strip lights in a profile. The Accent™ profile is made for plinths. It fits 16 to 18mm plinth boards, angles the light for a soft spread, and its accessories take the light around corners without dark patches. It suits strips 5mm wide or narrower.
Choosing the colour of light
- TrioTone®. Halo TrioTone® and Luce TrioTone® let you pick warm white (3000K), natural white (4000K) or cool white (5000K) on the light itself, so you can match the kitchen when you fit it.
- CCT. Stellar Pro™ adjusts from warm to cool white (2700K to 6000K) using the CCT Receiver and Remote Control, or the Titan™ Smart Kinetic Driver and the free Link Sensio app.
- Single colour. Iris™ is natural white (4000K).
For help matching light to worktops and finishes, see light temperatures for kitchen worktops.
Powering and fitting plinth lights
All four plinth spotlights run at 24V and connect to an LED driver, which converts mains power to 24V. They are plug and play, and several fittings daisy chain together, so one cable runs from light to light. See our range of 24V LED drivers and use the Driver Calculator to choose the right size. Any work on mains wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.
Sensors and control
Plinth lights can switch on automatically. A PIR sensor turns the lights on when it detects movement, which suits plinths and wardrobes. Halo TrioTone®, Luce TrioTone® and Iris™ dim with a receiver or smart driver, and Stellar Pro™ dims and changes colour with the CCT Receiver or Titan™ Smart Kinetic Driver. Frequently asked questions
What are plinth lights?
Small LED lights fitted into the plinth, or kickboard, at the base of kitchen and utility units. They light the floor with a soft glow.
Are plinth lights and kickboard lights the same thing?
Yes. Plinth and kickboard are two names for the panel at the base of the units, so plinth lights and kickboard lights are the same product.
What colour plinth lights should I choose?
Warm white (3000K) gives a soft, cosy glow at floor level. Natural white (4000K) is clearer and suits modern kitchens. If you are unsure, TrioTone® lights let you choose when you fit them, and Stellar Pro™ lets you change the colour at any time.
Do plinth lights need a driver?
Yes. Our plinth lights run at 24V and connect to an LED driver. The Iris™ pack of 4 includes a Titan driver and a 3-pin plug.
Can plinth lights be dimmed?
Yes, with a receiver or smart driver. Check the specification tab on each product page for the control it needs.
Can plinth lights come on with a sensor?
Yes. A PIR sensor switches them on when someone walks into the room, which is useful at night.
Can I use plinth lights in a bathroom?
Iris™ is suitable for bathroom zone 2 as well as kitchen plinths. Check our bathroom zones and IP ratings guide before you choose.
Spotlights or strip, which is better for a plinth?
Spotlights give separate pools of light and a classic look. LED strip in the Accent™ profile gives one continuous glow along the whole run. Both work with the same 24V drivers.
What warranty do Sensio plinth lights have?
Our plinth spotlights have integrated LEDs, so they come with our 7 year guarantee on purchases from 1st March 2026. See our guarantee for the full terms.
