Kitchen Island Lighting Ideas

The best kitchen island lighting usually combines three layers: pendants or downlights above for task light, a hidden LED strip under the worktop overhang for a soft glow, and plinth lights round the base so the island seems to float. Pendant height matters most, and a common rule of thumb is to leave roughly 75cm to 90cm between the worktop and the bottom of the shade, but always confirm the final drop with your kitchen designer or electrician.

Pendant lights above the island

Pendants are the classic choice above an island because they put light right where you chop, serve and eat, and they act as a design feature in their own right. Two or three in a row is a popular layout, or a single statement fitting over a smaller island.

Sensio has a small pendant range in our ceiling and downlights collection:

  • Bellatrix, a polished chrome pendant with a crushed crystal layer in the base that makes the light sparkle. It hangs on adjustable stainless steel cables, is IP44 rated and is dimmable when installed with a wall dimming switch. It is designed to suspend above a kitchen island or a free standing bath.
  • Solinas, a matt black, industrial style cylindrical pendant with a crushed crystal ring and underside lens for diffused light. It takes a replaceable GU10 LED bulb in warm or cool white, is IP44 rated and works with a wall dimmer. It suits a single pendant or a cluster.

How high should kitchen island lights be?

There is no fixed standard height for island pendants. A common rule of thumb is to hang the bottom of each pendant roughly 75cm to 90cm above the worktop, so the light reaches the surface without blocking anyone's view across the island. Taller households often go higher, and a larger shade may need more clearance. Your kitchen designer or electrician can check the ceiling height, the cable length of the fitting and any adjustment it allows before anything is fixed in place.

LED strip under the worktop overhang

If your island has a breakfast bar or an overhang, a run of LED strip tucked underneath adds a soft wash of light down the side panel and across the floor. It makes an island look finished in the evening.

A COB strip works well here because it gives a continuous line of light rather than a row of dots. Polar X, for example, is a free-cut COB LED strip you can cut to any length, with no visible LED dots and no need for a profile or cover. It runs at 24V and comes in warm white (3000K), natural white (4000K) or cool white. If you prefer a neater, more protected finish, set the strip in an aluminium channel from our LED profiles range.

You can see every strip suited to kitchens in our LED strip lights collection, and our guide to the best LED strip lights for a kitchen compares them by job.

Plinth lights round the base

Lighting the plinth or kickboard at the foot of the island gives a floating effect and helps you find your way at night without switching on the main lights. You can use individual plinth lights or a continuous strip.

Halo TrioTone is a recessed LED plinth light with a button on the underside to choose warm white (3000K), natural white (4000K) or cool white (5000K). Its plug and play connections let you daisy chain several lights, and the diffused cover hides the LED points. Browse the full plinth and kickboard lighting range, or read our plinth lighting guide for spacing and layout ideas.

Lighting the island ends and worktops

A short run of strip under the overhang at each end, or a feature shelf built into the end, can tie the island into the rest of the kitchen. If your island has open shelving or a display end, a strip set into a profile along the front edge lights what is on show without glare.

For the main worktop runs round the room, our worktop lighting collection covers under cabinet strip and mains fittings, so the island and the perimeter can share the same colour of light.

Choosing the right light colour

Keep the colour consistent across the island and the rest of the kitchen, otherwise the different layers can clash.

Light colour Typical feel Where it works on an island
Warm white (around 3000K) Cosy, relaxed Pendants, breakfast bar strip, evening mood lighting
Natural white (around 4000K) Clear, balanced Prep areas and kitchens with lots of white or grey
Cool white Crisp, bright Very modern schemes and task lighting

If you cannot decide, products with TrioTone let you pick warm, natural or cool white on the fitting itself.

Controls and dimming

An island is used for cooking, homework, drinks and late night snacks, so being able to dim it is worth planning in from the start. Put the pendants on one circuit and the under-bar and plinth lighting on another, so you can run just the low level glow in the evening.

For LED strip and plinth lights, the Titan Smart Kinetic 24V driver can be controlled from the Link Sensio app, by voice with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, or with the wireless Titan Kinetic Switch. The Universal Remote Control can dim single colour lighting when used with the right receiver. Note that the Titan Smart Kinetic is not to be installed with a wall dimmer, so check controls with your electrician.

Every Sensio product is backed by our 7 year guarantee, and our TrueFIT bespoke cutting service can cut strip to length for your island.

FAQs

How high should kitchen island lights be?

A common rule of thumb is roughly 75cm to 90cm between the worktop and the bottom of the pendant. It depends on your ceiling height, the size of the shade and who uses the island, so confirm the final height with your kitchen designer or electrician.

How many pendants should go over a kitchen island?

Two or three pendants spaced evenly along the island is a popular layout. A smaller island may suit a single statement pendant. Think about the length of the island and the size of each shade so they do not look crowded.

Can I put LED strip under a breakfast bar?

Yes. A strip under the overhang gives a soft wash of light down the side panel. A COB strip such as Polar X gives a continuous line of light, and an aluminium profile adds a neater finish.

Should island lights be warm or cool white?

Many homes choose warm white for a relaxed feel, or natural white for a brighter, cleaner look. The key is to match the colour of all the lighting layers in the kitchen.

Do I need an electrician to install island lighting?

Pendants and any mains wiring should be installed by a qualified electrician. Sensio LED strip and plinth lights connect to a driver, and the driver's mains connection should also be done by a qualified electrician.
