How to get guest room lighting right

To get guest room lighting right, plan task, mood and convenience lighting together. Give each guest their own bedside reading light, add a softly lit headboard for mood, and build convenience lighting into the wardrobe and under the bed. Keep it warm (2700K to 3000K) and make the controls simple.

The guest room is the heart of any hotel. It’s where guests unwind after a long journey, prepare for a big meeting or sleep in on a lazy Sunday. More than anything, they want it to feel like a home from home.

Lighting plays a huge part in that feeling. The right hotel bedroom lighting is warm, inviting lighting that fosters comfort, making a room feel calm, cosy and easy to live in. The wrong lighting leaves guests squinting, fumbling for switches or lying awake under a glaring ceiling light.

Here are seven hotel bedroom lighting ideas that get it right, and that guests notice for all the right reasons.

1. Start with a soft, layered base

A single overhead light rarely makes a room feel welcoming. Instead, build three layers: task lighting for reading and getting ready, mood lighting from wall lights and hidden LED strips, and convenience lighting in the wardrobe and under the bed. Layered light creates depth and warmth, and gives guests choices.

Keep colour temperatures warm, around 2700K to 3000K, for a relaxed, residential feel. It’s also the warm palette most hotel brands specify.

2. Make headboard lighting a feature

Headboard lighting is one of the simplest ways to add instant atmosphere. A line of LED strip set into or behind the headboard creates a soft glow that frames the bed and makes the room feel finished.

For a seamless look, use a slim LED strip inside an aluminium LED profile with a diffuser. Ultra-slim options like Razor X 2mm can be recessed into a narrow channel in the joinery, giving a clean, fully diffused line of light with no visible dots. If the wall behind the bed has acoustic panelling, Flex, our cut-free, push-fit flexible profile with Polar X Pro COB strip pre-installed, sits neatly between the slats. It’s discreet when unlit and stunning when on.

3. Add under bed lighting for a gentle night light

Under bed lighting is a small touch with a big impact. A soft glow beneath the bed makes it appear to float, adding a boutique feel. More importantly, it works as a night light, helping guests find their way to the bathroom without switching on the main lights.

Pair it with a motion sensor so it switches on automatically when a guest steps out of bed, then fades off again. Keep the light low and warm so it doesn’t disturb anyone still sleeping.

4. Light the wardrobe so guests can see what they packed

There’s nothing worse than rummaging through a dark wardrobe. Wardrobe lighting that switches on as the door opens is a detail guests appreciate every time they use it.

Options include:

  • LED strip in a profile along the top or sides of the wardrobe, for even light across the hanging rail
  • Illuminated hanging rails, which light clothes directly from above
  • Door or motion sensors, so lights switch on and off automatically and never get left on

Low-voltage LED strip is ideal here. It runs cool, uses very little energy and integrates neatly into furniture. For a flush finish built in at manufacture, our Polar X COB strip pairs with the Zella diffusing cover to give a smooth, even line of light down the wardrobe.

5. Give every guest their own reading light

If two guests share a room, one may want to read while the other sleeps. Bedside reading lights should be directional, with a focused beam, and controlled separately on each side of the bed. Adjustable wall-mounted reading lights, or wall lights with a reading lamp built in, also free up space on the bedside table.

6. Light the desk and dressing area properly

Many guests work from their room, especially in serviced apartments and aparthotels, or get ready for an event there. A desk or dressing area needs good, even task lighting, ideally with a slightly cooler or adjustable colour temperature. An illuminated mirror is a great addition here, giving flattering, shadow-free light for getting ready.

7. Keep controls simple

The most common guest complaint about hotel lighting isn’t the fittings, it’s the switches. Guests don’t want to experiment with a panel of unlabelled buttons at midnight.

  • Put a master switch by the bed and by the door.
  • Label switches clearly, or use intuitive scene buttons such as “Relax” and “Night”.
  • Consider smart lighting controls and wireless switches, which can be placed exactly where guests need them without chasing walls. These are especially useful in refurbishments.

FAQs

What lighting do hotels use in bedrooms? Warm lighting in three layers works best: task lighting for reading and getting ready, mood lighting behind the headboard, and convenience lighting in the wardrobe and under the bed.

What is under bed lighting? Under bed lighting is a low-level LED strip fitted beneath the bed frame. It creates a floating effect and works as a gentle night light.

How do you light a wardrobe? The neatest option is LED strip in an aluminium profile, or an illuminated hanging rail, switched by a door or motion sensor so it comes on when the wardrobe opens.

What colour temperature is best for a hotel bedroom? Warm white, around 2700K to 3000K, creates a calm, homely feel that suits most hotel bedrooms.

Can lighting be built into hotel bedroom furniture? Yes. Low-voltage LED strip can be integrated into headboards, wardrobes and bedside units at manufacture, giving a clean, built-in finish. Services like TrueFIT supply strip cut to exact lengths, so every room is fitted consistently.
