What Is Circadian Rhythm?

Circadian rhythm is your body's 24-hour internal clock. It governs when you feel alert, hungry and tired, and it is set primarily by the light entering your eyes.

Your body runs on a 24-hour internal clock, the circadian rhythm, and it has done since long before electric lighting existed. It governs when you feel alert, when you feel tired, when you are hungry and when your body carries out its essential cellular repair. It is managed by a small region of the brain called the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN), which responds above all to one cue: light.

When light hits the retina, specialist photoreceptive cells signal the SCN, which suppresses melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy) and increases cortisol (the hormone that drives alertness). Put simply, your body reads light as its instruction for how to behave which is why the light in a home is doing far more than decorating it.

 

How Does Circadian Rhythm Affect Me?

Circadian rhythm affects your energy, focus, appetite and sleep quality across the whole day. Getting the wrong light at the wrong time, such as bright cool light late at night, delays sleep and blunts recovery.

Across a typical day, that plays out in a pattern most of us will recognise:

·       Morning (around 7am): cortisol spikes and the body starts up. Bright, cool, daylight-mimicking light in kitchens and bathrooms anchors the clock and clears the last of the night's sleep hormones.

·       Mid-morning (around 10am): alertness peaks. This is the window for complex thinking, so a well-lit home genuinely supports how focused the household feels.

·       Evening (around 9pm): melatonin is released in preparation for sleep. This is where home lighting matters most: cool white LEDs and screens delay sleep by suppressing melatonin, while warm, dimmed light in living spaces and bedrooms works with it.

·       Overnight (around 2am): the deepest phase of cellular repair, and its quality depends largely on the light environment of the hours beforehand.


How Should You Light a Home to Support Circadian Rhythm?

Use brighter, cooler light (around 4000K to 6500K) in morning and task spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms, and warmer, dimmed light (around 2700K to 3000K) in living rooms and bedrooms from early evening onwards.

A home that is lit thoughtfully, with brighter, cooler light in functional morning spaces and warmer, dimmer light in evening living areas, is a home that actively supports the health and wellbeing of everyone in it. For families with young children, whose circadian rhythms are particularly sensitive to light cues, this matters even more. For older residents, whose natural melatonin production declines with age, the right evening light environment can make a meaningful difference to sleep quality and, by extension, overall health.
